Who were they?

Do you have a favourite sportsperson? Maybe you love Lionel Messi, or you prefer Chris Hoy. Do you think Nicola Adams is the best, or perhaps you love Simone Biles. In the 1930s and 1940s Joe Louis was one of the most popular sports people in the world - he was a boxer.

What did they do?

Have you ever heard of a man called Muhammed Ali? He was Heavyweight Champion of the World, but before him Joe Louis won this title. He was a famous boxer, and he visited Torquay to fight.

When they lived

Do you know who came to live in Torquay during the Second World War? Many Americans were sent to live here. Joe Louis joined the American Army during the Second World War and he visited Torquay to fight in a boxing match and meet local people and troops.

Interesting fact

Do you know anyone who is brilliant at two sports? Joe Louis was also an amazing golfer, even though at the time lots of people in America did not support equality for black people, so they could not play with white people.
